Pappu Can’t Dance Saala

Take  A Break

Vinay Pathak is a good actor, but also a very limited one. Or, after that star-making comic turn in Bheja Fry, nobody gives him anything radically different to do. Bharat Bhooshan needs to take a break now.
In Saurabh Shukla’s Pappu Can’t Dance Saala, he plays Vidyadhar Acharya (Vinay Pathak), a medical representative--yet another small town simpleton-- who lands up in Mumbai from Benares.  He lives in a low-rent building meant for government employees and has loud mouthed Bollywood backup dancer Mehek (Neha Dhupia) as a neighbour.  Through really far-fetched circumstances, ends up sharing a flat with her, a chalk-n-cheese romance is inevitable.

Even though there are some sharp observations about Mumbai and its stereotypes, after a reasonably breezy first hour, the film quickly loses the plot while trying to stick to the conflict, separation, resolution route. The two lead characters are not interesting enough to keep up the zing till the end.

Neha Dhupia does spring a surprise as the Kolhapuri bombshell in this otherwise predictable romcom.  But Vinay Pathak plays the same kind of part so often that after a while it will be difficult to tell his films apart.
